Prospective Trades/Apprentices
You become an apprentice by finding an employer to sponsor you & registering the apprenticeship with the ITA. If you are in high school you can also start your apprenticeship through a youth (ACE-IT) program. Also consider a foundation program as a means of gaining Level 1 experience for most trades (and entering the workplace).

International Students and Skilled Workers

In BC, there are many excellent opportunities for both international students and recent immigrants to pursue a career in BC trades. There are many services to assist those international students who wish to pursue an education in BC trades. We can also be of assistance in helping you thru the process of obtaining employment in a BC trade, and working through evaluating transfer credits and previous education credentials. Many of the institutions listed here, have staff dedicated to working with international students and those interested should contact those departments listed on the applicable institutional web-site for assistance in the planning process, which includes:

  • Planning your education
  • Evaluating your program options
  • Applying for a study permit or visitor’s visa
  • Meeting program requirements including any English proficiency requirements and any transfer credits evaluation
  • Finding a home away from home

The Government of also has created a web site to help prospective international students work through the process of coming to BC to attend studies. Note, that while the site is in English, if you are viewing it from France, South Korea, Mexico, China or India it should re-direct to a site that is in that national language.
