Aircraft Maintenance Technician

An Aircraft Maintenance Technician is responsible for the certification of an aircraft after maintenance, inspection, repair or modification. This occupation requires a high degree of responsibility and skill, including:

  • Certifying airworthiness of airframe, piston and turbine engines, electrical/electronic systems, propellers and rotary systems;
  • Troubleshooting aircraft structural, mechanical or electrical systems to identify problems;
  • Adjusting and repairing systems according to specifications, technical drawings, manuals and established procedures;
  • Repairing and overhauling aircraft structural, mechanical or electrical systems;
  • Installing or modifying aircraft engines, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, flight control, fuel and pneumatic systems;
  • Dismantling airframes, aircraft engines or other aircraft systems for repair, overhaul, inspection and reassembly;
  • Supervising, performing and documenting routine maintenance.

Recommendations

English 12 or Communications 12, or 3 credits of post-secondary English, Humanities or Social Sciences, and Math 11.

 

A background in General or Automotive Mechanics is recommended, plus good colour vision.

 

Training is available at Foundation and Apprenticeship levels. Foundation programs typically consist of 62-64 weeks of training. About 50% of the day is spent on theory discussions in a classroom, followed by hands-on practical training in shops and an aircraft hangar.

 

Apprentices are required to accumulate 7,200 hours of work-based training.
