The Horticulture trade can be divided into two categories, Landscape and Production.
Landscape Horticulturists select, handle and utilize trees, shrubs and ornamental plants and turf grass for the design, development and maintenance of public and private landscaping spaces. They prepare soil and plants, and cultivate, prune and irrigate to maintain plant vigour. Landscape Horticulturists also control plant pests utilizing appropriate integrated pest management techniques. Landscape Horticulturist is a nationally designated trade under the Interprovincial Standards Red Seal Program.
Production Horticulturists grow and market crops in both nursery and/or greenhouse environments. A Production Horticulturist prepares growing mediums and propagates, grades, prunes and prepares plants for distribution. They also control plant pests utilizing appropriate pest management techniques. Production Horticulturist is not a Red Seal designated program.
