Architectural/Structural CAD Technician

Architectural and/or Structural CAD Technicians apply drafting, computer applications, and graphic presentation applications with architectural and design skills used in the preparation of architectural projects and construction of buildings. Their position is one of a skilled assistant to architects, engineers or technologists, who possess a broad knowledge of the architectural and/or engineering disciplines.

Students receive training in a variety of applications in architecture, building construction and industrial applications, integrating Computer-Aided Drafting and Design (CAD or CADD) and/or Building Information Modelling (BIM) systems.

Graduates will have developed the drafting and 3D modelling skills which will enable them to enter the workforce in many areas as team members in architectural offices, consulting engineering firms, municipal, provincial or federal offices, as well as in private industry. They will be prepared to work on a wide variety of residential housing developments, commercial buildings and institutional complexes.

Recommendations

Requirements vary depending on the institution. Generally, grade 12 graduation is required, plus Math 11. In addition, an institution may require further credits of post-secondary English, Humanities or Social Sciences.

 

In some of the programs, applicants must indicate their area of specialization, either Architectural or Structural.
